he was not to use it. This was the rod of God (Exod. 4:20; 17:9) through which God had worked a number of spectacular miracles including bringing forth enough water from a rock to provide for millions of people and their cattle in the desert (Exod. 17:1–7). Thus, Moses used that which belonged to God, was God’s instrument of power, and which God had commanded him to take as an instrument of disobedience.
